What is a DataStream?
For a simple example you have a textfile: a DataStream are the correlated letters and numbers of your textfile.

What is a AlternateDataStream?
On a NTFS - Disk consist each file (is similar by directories) from one DataStream but can have more than one. Only the first is visible in Filemanagers and you access it about filename. All others are hidden and have a name to access. It looks like this: "c:\Test.txt:Stream1".

How can I access to such a stream?
If you want to create such a stream please go to your Startmenu and choose "Run" - Item. In the prompt enter the following (without ""): "notepad c:\Test1.txt:Stream2". The file doesn't exist and Notepad ask you if you want to create a new file. Answer it with "yes" and write a short text. Save the file and close Notepad. Now goto Startmenu and "Run" - Item again and enter in prompt "notepad c:\Test1.txt:Stream2.txt". Notepad shows your written text.

Notice: Notepad add automaticly the extension ".txt" to your new stream. You create it as "c:\Test1.txt:Stream2" and Notepad save it as "c:\Test1.txt:Stream2.txt".

The same can you do with a directory. If you want add a datastream to a directory "c:\test" open your startmenu and choose "Run" - Item and enter following in prompt: "notepad c:\test:Stream3". The file doesn't exist and notepad ask you if you want to create a new file. Answer it with "yes" and write a short text. Save text and close notepad. Reopen your startmenu and select "Run" - Item" and enter "c:\test:Stream3.txt". Notepad shows your written text.
