Chess Timer
|
Time your chess games with this tool. Chess Timer allows users to time their conventional games of two player chess. It also allows the players to set limits on the game or turn time of each player (with increments), among many other options.
How to: Use the Setup screen:
There are many options in the setup window, and at first it may seem overwhelming, but don't worry, this should explain each aspect of it, from the top of the window to the bottom.
Player names
In these text boxes, enter the names of the two chess players, the white player is the one with an asterisk (*).
Turn time
This is the amount of time permitted for each player in each turn. For example, if you wanted to only allow 5 seconds per move, set the seconds box to 5.
Game time
This is the amount of time permitted for each player in each game. For example, if you wanted a game shorter than 5 minutes, give each player 2 min 30 seconds.
Carrying over time
If the player goes over their set turn time, the time the went over it by will be deducted from their turn time next move. Click the text to enable or not.
Carrying spare time
This means that any time left over from the previous move will be added on to the player's next move's turn time. For example, if Player1 had a turn time of 5 seconds, but they only took 2 seconds for their first move, they would have 3 seconds left over, and if Carrying Spare Time is enabled, these extra 3 seconds will be added onto their next turn time, meaning that on their next move they would have a turn time of 8 seconds (5+3). Click the text to enable or not.
Going over turn time x times
Set this to how many times you want the player to be allowed to exceed their turn time throughout the game.
Going over turn time x times in a row
Set this to how many times you want the player to be allowed to exceed their turn time in-a-row.
Going over set turn time by x
Set this to the total time you want the player to be able to go over their turn time in one go, before they lose.
Total over time reaches x
Chess Timer keeps track of the total amount of time that a player has gone over their turn time throughout the game. Set this to how high you want to let that reach before that player loses.
Switch starting player
Use this to change which player is white, the white player is the one with a star at the end of their name.
Switch player positions
What it says...
P1 -> P2
Makes all the options for the player on the right the same as the options for the player on the left, except the name. Useful if you are playing a game where you both have the same settings, but you can't be bothered to set them twice :).
P2 -> P1

Quit Chess Timer v.3
Quits chess Timer. Useful if the mouse is too far away from the X at the top right.
Accept These Settings
Starts the game with the settings you have chosen for each player!
How to: Use profiles
The profile manager is located in the "Profile" tab of the Setup window. from here you can edit, view and delete profiles. First select "Load a profile" to load the profile you want to change. Then you can see the list of games which have been played by this profile. Select a game to view/delete it, then press View or Delete depending on what you want to do. You can also delete an entire profile.
To create a new profile simply enter the player's name into the name box of the Setup tab. Then once you've played one game, when you quit, you will get the option to save the game to the players'profiles, select "Yes", and then when it asks you to confirm that you want to create a new profile, select "Ok".
To add a game to an existing profile, enter the player's name, or select "..." and pick the profile from the list. Then play a game, when you quit select "Yes" to save the game to the players' profiles, then when it asks you to confirm that you want to save over the player's profile, press "Ok".
How to: Use the game screen
Almost any key, but not the pause and win key (default 'p' and 'w') can be used to start the game, or switch between which player is moving. We find SPACE is the easiest. Press a key to start the game, and the player who is white will be highlighted, and their game/turn times will tick up. Unlike v.2 and 1, Chess Timer v.3 works in times smaller than seconds, so after the first turn the game/turn times will likely be out of sync. At the end of each move, the player who has just moved should press a key to move the chess timer onto the next player's turn. Chess Timer does the rest! It will beep at you when you are going over the turn time. And when a player loses, it will bring up a screen which allows you to do one of the following;
(a) ignore that the player has lost and continue the game. Chess Timer will modify the user options, such as reseting the turns over in-a-row, depending on the reason(s) the player lost.
(b) view player stats. This screen displays information about each player.
(c) exit back to setup, to continue another game/quit Chess Timer.
Pausing the game;
You can pause the game by pressing the pause key (default 'p'). A notice will be placed stating that the game is paused. This is useful if you want to look at the player stats (do so by clicking on the paused notice), move the chess board, or just spend a few extra seconds over your move while your opponent isn't looking.
Checkmating:
If the game ends in a checkmate, then press the win key (default 'w') to tell Chess Timer that the CURRENT player won the game. If it proves to be a false alarm, then play can continue, but be aware that chess timer will change who's move it is, so that the player who was supposedly check mated will be moving instead.
