Diffraction Lab Basic is a real-time 3D simulation of wave diffraction in a lab bench setup. The simulation calculates the diffraction pattern produced by a diffracting element. The diffraction pattern is calculated from the amplitudes of interfering waves that arrive at a screen at a distance from the diffracting element. The waves are combined as phasors with amplitudes and phases determined the paths they have taken,

The opening window of the application is shown below. At the center is the 3D coordinate system that holds the diffracting element at the origin, the wave source on the right (-x direction) and the diffraction pattern on the screen on the left (+ x direction). Around the coordinate system are different views of the diffraction pattern. Most of the menu items are concerned with the choice of the diffracting element (a square aperture in the image).

The location of the wave source, screen, value of the wavelength and most other parameters in the simulation are adjustable by sliders on the right-hand side.
