Folder Size for Windows adds a new column to the Details view in Windows Explorer. The new column shows not only the size of files, but also the size of folders. It keeps track of which folders you view, and scans them in the background so you can see complete size of all files within the folder. It's very useful for cleaning up your disk. Once you get used to having that information available, a directory listing simply looks incomplete without it!

Folder Size for Windows Featues:
1. Don't switch to another program to see folder sizes. It's always there when you're viewing your folders (even in Open and Save file dialog boxes, you can change the view), and it's a great visual cue to help you find the one you're looking for. Not just for disk cleanup, but for any time you need to choose a folder.

2. No scanning phase before you can start. As soon as you display the Folder Size column, you'll see sizes immediately. Large folders will continue to scan in the background while you browse your folders.

3. Explorer will automatically update the folder size column in real-time. No more manual rescanning.

4. Background scans won't monopolize your disk. When Folder Size detects that other programs are doing a lot of reading to and writing from the hard disk being scanned, the background scanning will wait for the other programs to finish.

5. If you don't show the Folder Size column for a while, it won't forget what it's already scanned, but the background scanner doesn't stay active. It won't waste any CPU time maintaining the cache on your P2P sharing or gaming machine that's always changing files.

Setting it up
1. First, make sure you're running Windows 2000 or XP. Sorry, it doesn't work in Vista.
2. Download the installer (regular 32-bit) (XP x64).
3. Run the downloaded file to start the install wizard. It has boring template text, so just keep clicking Next. Typical and Complete installs do the same thing, Custom lets you change where it gets installed.
4. Now the Folder Size column is available to Explorer, but Explorer isn't displaying it yet. Open an Explorer window in Details view.
5. Right click on the column headers to see a list of columns you can add. Choose Folder Size.
6. Now we can replace the existing Size column with the new Folder Size column. Right click on the column headers and uncheck the Size column. Drag the Folder Size column header to where Size used to be.
7. Make this the default view for all folders. Go to Folder Options from the Tools menu. In the View tab, click Apply to All Folders.

Changing settings
1. Look in the Windows Control Panels to find the Folder Size control panel. If you're in the confusing Category View in XP, where it says Pick a category, click on Switch to Classic View in the left-hand pane. And then view as Icons. Isn't that better?
2. Use the control panel to change the way sizes are displayed. Also stop the service to stop any background activity.

Removing
So it crashes every once in a while, and slows down your computer. That's no reason to uninstall it. Well, if you really want to, use the Add or Remove Programs control panel. You'll have to manually fix the columns in Explorer too.
