Gimpel3D converts single images or frame sequences into stereoscopic 3D using a combination of traditional approaches and a proprietary projective 3D modeling system.

Simply put, the most accurate representation of a 2D image in stereo is from a true 3D model of the scene, this can be represented by polygonal geometry or a per-pixel depth map.

A per-pixel depth map is most accurate when it is projected against true proportional geometry (vs. a simple relative depth), this ensures that the location at each pixel is the closest to the stereo view in real life.

modeling a geometric scene for stereo conversion is a "True 3D" conversion process, vs. the standard "2D-To-Stereo" approach that has been popularly marketed as "3D".

Some packages do support basic projective editing for primitive objects or displacement grids, but these are very limited in scope and generally provided as secondary features (not intended as the primary method of modeling the scene). For accurate stereo conversion, the 3D modeling cannot be applied as an afterthought or secondary feature, it must be integrated into the core approach.
