IPUpload
|
What IPUpload does is find out what your home Public Dynamic IP Address is, then uploads a webpage to your Internet Service Providers FTP Server which will redirect visitors back to your home Web or FTP Server.
This is perfect for hosting your own FTP or Webserver with a Dynamic IP Address. Most Cable, DSL and Dialup Internet Service Providers (including Netscape, AOL, Comcast) assign you a Dynamic IP Address.
When you want to host your own Web or FTP Server from home, you run into two issues that IPUpload will help you resolve. The first issue is that your Internet Service Provider assigns you a Dynamic Public IP Address instead of a Static Public IP Address. The second issue is that if you protect yourself (via a hardware firewall/router/gateway, which I highly recommend) you use what is called a Private IP Address instead of a Public IP Address. In order to effectively run your own Web/FTP Server, you will need to perform the following steps to make the connection between your Site Name (i.e. www.mysite.com) and your home computer.
1. Find out what your True Public IP Address is
2. Create a webpage with this IP Address and a Redirect statement.
3. Upload this webpage to your Internet Service Providers free* FTP Server (i.e. members.aol.com/username/redirect.htm)
4. Link your site name (ie www.mysite.com) to forward requests to this redirect page (i.e. members.aol.com/username/redirect.htm)
Now when someone goes to www.mysite.com it forwards them to members.aol.com/username/redirect.htm, then this forwards them to your actual home computer. It all happens seamlessly when setup.
Most Cable, DSL and Dialup Internet Service Providers (including Netscape, AOL, Comcast) offer you a free FTP account.
