NavScope
|
NavScope is a 3d file manager for Windows. Can keep many folders opened simultaneously, moves between them with short animation. Strongly relies on Windows Shell (context menu, OLE drag&drop, uses shell functions for file operations, has integrated Windows Explorer).
Average user often works with a few folders simultaneously, frequent switching between them (their windows/tabs) is annoyance that makes the work inefficient. While GPU technologies advanced greatly over past years, modern file managers are heavily based on 2D UI. NavScope tries to utilize the potential of modern hardware to increase efficiency of basic file management operations. File system operations take place in 3D space and the primary goal of NavScope is to serve as a usable tool for navigating there. More folders can be opened simultaneously. File system objects are perceived in a more continuous way because of 3D layout. To further increase usability, typical operations are streamlined. Mouse actions are often slow, especially multiple mouse clicks. NavScope tries to eliminate redundant mouse clicks and encourages using keyboard where this is appropriate. The aim of the project is to make your day-to-day work with file system as efficient as possible.
Below are a few values that influenced the design.
1. Many folders and 3D
Working with many folders is the barest necessity. The issue is addressed by utilizing 3D representation of folders. Smooth scaling and switching. Observe a few folders at a glance.
2. Portable
NavScope from the very beginning was designed with portability in mind. That's why it runs without installation. You can take it anywhere on your flash drive.
3. Small
Corresponded with previous item. It must be convenient to download, upload, copy it. No time to wait until long copying operation completes. Get started and solve your problems as soon as possible.
4. Clean
The program uses only files in its own directory. No additional garbage in your system. Registry is not used (portability requirement).
5. Simple
Overloaded interface is avoided intentionally. Controls are (and will be) supplied primarily with short help text, not pictures. To memorize meaning of a picture is harder and less productive than the one of a keyboard shortcut.
6. Efficient
NavScope tries to reduce number of required user actions as possible. When using mouse combined with keyboard, the program is efficient in basic file operations. Like: open certain folder and copy all EXEs from it to flash drive. Just try this in different programs.
