PGPNotes
|
Enables Lotus Notes users to conveniently encrypt and decrypt messages/attachments using PGP or WinPT. PGPNotes enables Lotus Notes users to conveniently encrypt and decrypt messages/attachments using PGP or GnuPG, all from within the Notes client itself.
Currently, PGP is the de-facto standard for strong encryption of Internet email. Since US prohibits the export of software which incorporates strong encryption, PGP is practically the only means of secure global communications.
Normally, a Notes user who wants to encrypt/decrypt using PGP/GnuPG will need to access the program from the Windows taskbar and follow a number of steps. PGPNotes makes secure communication as easy as clicking one button. This helps reduce the number of circumstances where important messages are sent over the Internet without first properly securing them due to the inconvenience of doing so.
PGPNotes Features:
1. One-click access to encryption/decryption within the Lotus Notes client.
2. Automatic decryption of PGPNotes-encrypted emails and attachments.
3. Supports passphrase caching for greater convenience.
Requirements:
* Lotus Notes Version 4.5.x to 4.6.x, 5.0.2 and above, 6 and above.
* Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) Personal/Business Edition Ver 5.5.x/Ver 6.x, or GnuPG 1.x.
Limitations:
* The trial version of PGPNotes is fully functional, except that the public key import and file decryption functions are disabled.
Please Note: PGPNotes is not a replacement for PGP/WinPT. It merely makes it more transparent and convenient for Lotus Notes users to encrypt/decrypt using PGP/WinPT.
Program installation
Run pgpnotes-setup.exe. This will install all the necessary components to your system. It will also install PGPNotes Control that implements the passphrase caching feature in PGPNotes.
Without PGPNotes Control, you will be prompt to enter your PGP passphrase everytime you encrypt or decrypt a message using PGPNotes. PGPNotes Control will cache the passphrase in memory for some minutes of inactivity before prompting you for the passphrase again.
Check that your TEMP environment variable is set properly. To do this, run MSDOS Prompt and type "set" at the command line. In the default Windows configuration, this variable is set to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (for older versions of Windows) or C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Local Settings\Temp.
It is important to leave the TEMP directory alone during PGPNotes encryption/decryption, because this directory is used for storing temporary files. For example, do not try to decrypt/detach files to this directory, as it may overwrite temporary files required for proper operation of PGPNotes.
If you have installed PGPNotes for GnuPG, you will need to tell PGPNotes where GnuPG is installed. This is done by selecting Options... from PGPNotes Control and entering the full path in GnuPG executable location.
