RegexRenamer is a powerful but simple user-friendly graphical tool used to batch rename files using regular expressions. A regular expression (or regex) is simply text that contains special characters that together defines a pattern that can be used to match text, in this case filenames. Using the power of regexes it becomes easy to apply complex transformations to large groups of files that otherwise would not be possible with plain match & replace.
RegexRenamer Features:
1. Realtime regex validation, filename preview, conflict detection
2. File filtering by glob or regex (operate on a subset of files in a directory)
3. Flexible case-changing (change entire filename, or just the section matched by a regex)
4. Customisable sequential numbering (set start, padding, interval, reset)
5. Rename files in place, move & rename, copy & rename, backup before renaming
6. Support for network drives & network paths, renaming folders
7. Options to preserve file extension (only operate on filename), show/hide hidden files
8. Rename into subfolders (replace "file.txt" with "subdir\file.txt")
9. Complete documentation including examples, regex tutorial & quick reference guide
Regular expressions provide a standard way to define rules that can be applied to text to see if it matches, and optionally replace that match with other text. These rules are simply text (known as a pattern) where certain characters have special meanings. Therefore a regex consists of a match pattern and possibly a replace pattern. Match patterns can contain "capture groups" that store parts of the matched text, which can then be reinserted (usually in a different order or location) via the replace pattern.
