Change the names of your files to a format that you really like. Renamer is a simple to use and powerful tool for renaming groups of files. It's intended use is to clean up directories with digital photos or media files.

Using Renamer works as follows:
1. Click the 'Select Files' button and browse to the directory where the files that you would like to rename are located. In that directory, select multiple files by clicking a file and using Shift+Click or Ctrl+Click to add other files to the selection. You may have to select another filter (e.g. *.mp3), if you are looking for another type of file as opposed to the default JPEG files.

2. Enter a piece of text which Renamer should look for in the filenames. Then enter a piece of text the original text should be replaced with.

3. For advanced rename operations using wildcards you can check the 'Use regular expressions' checkbox. See the separate help page on regular expressions.

4. If there are numbers in (some of) the filenames, you may want to alter those numbers. There are two options you can select:

5. Use an offset - An Offset is added to or subtracted from each number. For example, if you use an offset of 50, the file IMG_1290.jpg will be renamed to IMG_1340.jpg.

6. Start at a specific number - All numbers are replaced with a sequential number starting at a specified Start number. For example, if you have two files, IMG_0190.jpg and IMG_0197.jpg, and you specify a start number of 100, you will end up with IMG_0100.jpg and IMG_0101.jpg.

7. Enter the Offset or Start number in the textbox. If the textbox remains empty, this functionality will not be used.

8. Press the 'Rename Files' button to rename the selected files. However, it is prudent to press the 'Test' button first. This will open a window that shows you a list of all rename actions that will be performed when pressing the 'Rename Files' button. You can then verify this list to see whether the rename action will give the desired results.

9. After a rename action, you have the option to undo the action. Press the 'Undo' button if this is what you want. Note that changing any of the rename parameters will disable the 'Undo' button.
