SNTP Service
|
SNTP Service is a powerful, painless time synchronization software with many features for professional users. It is a synchronization client/server for the more advanced user wishing to maintain network time synchronization and services under 32 bit versions of Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista, and Server 2008.
1. For any size network or one PC
2. Highly optimized, low-overhead design uses minimal resources
3. Constant monitoring and adjustment of system clock (no time warps or jumps)
4. Compensates for network delays
5. Includes easy, powerful control panel applet and tiny, fast service application
6. Control panel can be used remotely to configure, monitor, troubleshoot and track
7. Client/Server approach supports deployment in enterprise networks
While an effective tool for the desktop, it also includes important features for enterprise network deployment. From a single workstation, an administrator can remotely configure, monitor, troubleshoot and track licensing of enterprise-wide SNTPServ client and server components.
SNTP Service software consists of two components:
1. The first component is an application that runs in the background as a Windows service, performing various time synchronization tasks.
2. The second component is the control panel applet.
Power user advanced features:
1. Supports any combination of time servers, polled sequentially or in parallel
2. Handles time zone differences and roving systems
3. Supports remote control and provisioning
4. Built-in protection against Denial Of Service attacks
5. System log with 4 levels of events
6. Low overhead minimizes impact on network, server resources
7. Optimized for performance as Windows service
8. Supports native 64-bit execution for best performance on 64-bit operating systems
9. Complies with RFC2030 - Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) Version
SNTP Service Software Technical Notes:
1. The built-in control panel applet transparently uses WMI to allow the management and monitoring of the SNTPService running on local or remote systems.
2. Customers with advanced requirements can create VB scripts that interface directly with WMI in order to create their own additional custom, enterprise-wide time management schemes.
3. The service application (that runs in the background) has been specifically optimized to execute as a Windows 7, Vista, Server 2008, Server 2003 and XP service with access to a Winsock 2 network API.
4. Full SNTP client and server functions are incorporated, in complete compliance with RFC2030 - Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) version 4.
The SNTPService application can be configured using the SNTPService control panel applet. This is a small application you will find in your system control panel after installing the product. You need to be logged into a Windows NT Administrator account to use this applet to set up the service.
There are two main functions to the service: The SNTP Client and the SNTP Server. The Client is responsible for periodically obtaining the accurate time from an external NTP or SNTP server and setting the local system's clock. The Server is responsible for responding with the local system time when queried by external clients. The options configurable by the control panel applet are therefore organized along the same lines. Four tabs are provided, allowing you to select four categories of options:
1. The client options.
2. The server options.
3. The log options.
4. The registration options.
5. The last two categories are administrative in nature and do not directly affect the time synchronization functions.
Since the control panel applet can be used to control a locally installed SNTPService or one installed on a remote machine, the first thing you will see when you bring up the applet is the computer selection dialog. It allows you to select the machine where you want to manage the SNTPService.
