Images on computer screens are composed of dots of light called pixels. When i2sm begins analyzing an image, it starts at the coordinates specified in the StartX and StartY boxes. From that point it spirals out in a clockwise spiral analyzing pixels as it goes. It analyzes the hue (color), the saturation (intensity) and the brightness of each pixel then i2sm translates that information into a note and adds it to the song file. Once its done the analysis phase it saves a temporary copy of the song file then loads Windows Media Player to play back the song. Simple eh?
If there is any interest in i2sm then someday in the future I would like to be able to zoom in and out on the image to set the analysis boundries. I would also like to be able to produce songs in other formats such as mp3.

i2sm (Image to Sweet Music) enables you to convert JPG and PNG images to MIDI sound compositions. The program analyzes the pixels in the image (or an selected area within the image) and translates them into MIDI notes to create a unique acoustic fingerprint that often represent the overall mood of the input image. You can choose from a variety of instruments and also adjust several settings to smooth transition between notes, duration of each note, extend of the analysis, and more. An integrated playback allows you to play the Midi composition and you can also export it as .mid file.

In the interface for i2sm, the analysis settings are along the left with the loaded image on the right.
In the image you will notice a blue rectangle. This is the area that i2sm will use when analyzing image data. It is used when creating songs as well as when calculating the dominant and average colors for middle C. You set this rectangle by holding the 'Alt' key and left mouse button while dragging the mouse.
If you look at the image you will see a black circle with a black cross in it. This is the starting point where i2sm will begin its image analysis. You set this point either by clicking the left mouse button on the image or entering the coordinates directly into the StartX and StartY boxes.
If the image where you click the mouse is light like in this image, a black marker will appear. If the image is dark, a white marker will appear.
The analysis rectangle and the starting point are linked. You cannot have a starting point outside the analysis rectangle. So if you try to set the starting point outside the analysis rectangle, i2sm will snap it to the edge of the analysis rectangle. If you try to set the analysis rectangle so that the starting point does not lie within the rectangle, i2sm will snap the starting point to the edge of the analysis rectangle. Its really picky about that.
By default when you load an image, the analysis rectangle is the entire image and the starting point is in the upper left hand corner.
So operation is pretty simple. Load an image, set the settings the way you would like then click Play Midi.
